In 1904, Robert and Jennie Butchart relocated from Ontario toVancouver Island, where they initially established a cement plant on the abundant limestone deposit at Tod Inlet. By 1912, as the limestone deposits dwindled due to cement production, Jennie envisioned transforming the depleted area into a splendid garden and initiated the gradual transfer of topsoil via horse-drawn carts. This visionary effort culminated in the creation of the breathtaking Sunken Garden.
