Colonial Panama and Miraflores Locks

The image conjured by Panama is generally that of the spectacular Canal, considered by many a wonder of the world. However, few know of the amazing history of glory and tragedy that came to shape this country.

Over the years the city experienced changes that you will notice by the influence of different architecture, representing a wonderful blend of French, Spanish and Italian styles.

Founded in 1519, Panama City is the first city founded on the West coast of the Americas. All the loot stolen from Peru went through here making it the target of English pirate Henry Morgan who destroyed it in 1671. A new colonial Panama City, Casco Viejo was built in 1673 and today is Panama City's vibrant historical sector.

Next you will continue to the coastal strip or Balboa Avenue. An artificial filling exalting Panama Bay, built with the rocky material from the excavation of the Panama Canal expansion project. This former Canal Zone where the military installations of the American administration were give a gentle reminder of the strategic importance of the area.

Finally, your next stop will be Miraflores Observation Center, a center whose exhibitions focus on the famous Panama Canal. There are four exhibition halls that cover just about every aspect of the Panama Canal including its construction and its operation. During your visit, you can watch vessels cruise the waters and witness the lock gates open and close. There is also a 3D movie played on-site that highlights notable events through the Panama Canal's history.
