Activities Overview
1. Introduction and Explanation of Day of the Dead (20 minutes)
Begin your journey with a brief presentation on the history and cultural significance of the day of the Dead. Learn about the vibrant traditions that make this celebration so special and get an overview of the exciting activities we have planned for you.
2. Sugar Skull Crafting (40 minutes)
Unleash your creativity by decorating traditional sugar skulls! Using molds, sugar, meringue powder, and colorful icing, you’ll craft your own unique calaveritas to take home. This activity is a delightful way to engage with one of the most iconic symbols of the Day of the Dead.
3. Miniature Alebrijes Creation (40 minutes)
Discover the magic of alebrijes, the fantastical creatures of Mexican folklore. Under the guidance of our skilled teachers, you will model and paint your own miniature alebrije using polymer clay and acrylic paints. This hands-on activity allows you to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
4. Making Papel Picado (30 minutes)
Dive into the intricate art of papel picado, a traditional Mexican craft. Using colorful tissue paper and design templates, you will learn to cut and create stunning papel picado banners. These beautiful decorations are perfect for any festive occasion.
5. Creating Miniature Ofrendas (30 minutes)
Explore the tradition of creating ofrendas, or altars, which honor the spirits of loved ones. You will assemble a miniature ofrenda using small boxes, miniature food and drink items, crepe paper, and paper marigolds.
This heartfelt activity brings the spirit of the Day of the Dead to life.
6. Catrina Face Painting (30 minutes)
Transform into a Catrina, the elegant skeleton figure that has become a symbol of the Day of the Dead. With face paints, mirrors, and design stencils, you will learn to create beautiful and intricate Catrina face paintings. This activity is a fun way to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere.
7. Photography and Closing (20 minutes)
Capture the memories of your creations with a dedicated time for photos. Pose with your crafts and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow participants. We’ll conclude the workshop with a heartfelt thank you and the presentation of participation certificates.
