Exploration of Ancient Life in Ephesus
Begin your day with a journey to ancient Ephesus. Upon arrival, set out on foot with your guide to explore the numerous monuments, including the Forum, the Odeon, the Great Theater and more.
Explore the Terrace Houses, located in an archaeological site on the slopes of Bulbul Mountain, which feature engravings, mosaics, wall sections, and original floors, and offer an incredible view into the lifestyle of the rich Ephesians. As you depart the Ephesus site, you will see the hilltop ruins of the Basilica of St. John in the distance, which was erected in the 6th century A.D.
Next, visit a rug weaving center, where you will learn about rug weaving and have time for shopping. Then you will watch a folklore performance provided by local students and enjoy lunch featuring the mezes, wine, and traditional delicacies. The performance will feature folk dances that are standard at wedding ceremonies and regional and national festivals.
After lunch, we'll head to Ayasuluk, the old town of Selcuk, where Ephesus once stood. The town evolved from ancient times, known as Theologus or Altoluogo, eventually becoming Ayasoluk or Ayasuluk.
We'll visit the Isabey Mosque, built in 1375 on the site of a former pagan temple dedicated to Apollo. It later became a church and then a mosque, showcasing layers of history. Nearby are the Turkish baths, constructed for workers during the mosque's building, with 2,000-year-old stones offering a glimpse into the past.
Before heading back to the port, we'll pass the site where the Temple of Artemis once stood, now overshadowed by the Library of Celsus, a symbol of Ephesus' grandeur.
