A Day in Alexandria

This tour is a must-do for history lovers! Bring your camera to capture photos of these marvelous sites as well as St. Mark's Church, Abbo Elabbas Mosque, the old harbor of Alexandria and many others.

On this full day expedition you will be picked up by your guides for a scenic ride in an air-conditioned vehicle to the historic city of Alexandria. While here step inside the catacombs of Kom El Shokafa, the largest Roman cemetery in existence. See the several layers of shelf tombs cut into the hillside rock as well as a large room used to hold banquets for the dead.

Visit Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world's largest library with 8 million volumes as well as statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy the First. Check out the artifacts at the Manuscripts Museum and President Saddat Museum. Ride through the old downtown district with its Baroque, Italian and French influences and visit St. Mark's, the oldest church in Africa.

As you drive through the area, you'll pass through the old downtown, where you'll admire historic architecture featuring Baroque designs alongside elegant Italian and French-style properties. Next, we will stroll past the excavation site of the Old Roman City of Alexandria, which includes the Amphitheater remains, the Great Tomb excavation site, and other remains, as well as Roman villas. Although it is not permitted to enter these excavation sites, you will be able to observe them from the outside as our guide explains their historical significance.

Lunch is optional at a modern fish restaurant. In addition, you will pass the city's largest and most beautiful mosque, Abbo Elabbas Mosque (photo stop). Outside of it, you will see the most bizarre sight: an ancient funfair where kids may ride vintage rides and enjoy candy floss. On the opposing side of the street lies the old harbor and corniche, where you may observe traditional fisherman constructing nets, men fishing, and antique fishing boats.

Observe the exterior of Quaitbay Castle, which was constructed on the same plot of land as the historic Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. An amazing castle that makes for a fantastic photo op. You will see the royal gardens of King Farouk, the last king in Egypt's history, as well as the royal palaces of Haramlek and Salamlek. Once you arrive at Montaza Gardens, also known as the Love Garden (all romantic couples and families go there), you will also see the royal gardens of King Farouk. You will also walk along the famous Montaza bridge to the Tea Palace island, where you will see the queens' royal beaches.

The King of Mango is a fast two-minute stop along the route. You can also stop for a snapshot at the Unknown Soldier of Alexandria memorial and get some freshly squeezed juice at Alexandrian's drive-thru. Along the journey to Montaza Palace and Gardens, which is about 25 km distant, you may enjoy the stunning coastline and all the city panorama, including the old harbor of Alexandria, where 7000 structures were discovered submerged.

On your route back to port, you will pass the well-known Stanley Bridge, a modern landmark in Alexandria. Don't hesitate, reserve your spot now for a comprehensive city tour of Alexandria that is sure to be a highlight of your travels for years to come.

Please Note: Bibliotheca Alexandrina is closed on Fridays and public holidays. This 14-hour tour includes your English speaking Egyptologist guide, transportation, mineral water and all entrance fees to the sites.
