Private Lisbon Azulejo Tile Experience with Museum Visit
Step into one of Portugal's most iconic art forms on this private and immersive journey through the world of azulejos. These beautiful hand-painted tiles have a rich history that dates back to the Arabic influence in the Iberian Peninsula.
The day begins with a scenic drive south of Lisbon to the charming Azeitao region. A visit to the well-known Azulejos de Azeitao workshop offers insight into traditional techniques that are still used today. Learn about the history and craftsmanship behind these tiles before taking part in a hands-on painting experience. Each tile is fired after completion and can be delivered to a hotel in Lisbon or shipped home if preferred (shipping costs not included).
Following the workshop, there will be a stop for lunch at your own expense. The nearby fishing village of Sesimbra is a wonderful option, known for its fresh seafood and relaxed coastal atmosphere. The return to Lisbon includes views of some of the most impressive tile artwork found throughout the region.
On the return to Lisbon, take in striking examples of tilework found throughout the city, with the flexibility to pause for photos or brief stops along the way.
In the afternoon, visit the beautiful Madre de Deus Convent, a 15th-century landmark and home to the National Azulejo Museum. The interior of the church is a remarkable example of Baroque design, where every detail contributes to a complete work of art. The museum features an extensive collection of tiles ranging from the 15th century to contemporary works, including pieces from important international schools such as Spanish and Dutch artists. Highlights also include works by renowned Portuguese masters such as Bordalo Pinheiro, Raul Lino, and Maria Keil.
This private experience offers a thoughtful mix of history, creativity, and cultural discovery, enjoyed at a relaxed pace.
