Katakolon is a seaside town situated on a headland overlooking the Ionian Sea. Much of its history dates from the Middle Ages and the remains of the medieval Pontikokastro/Beauvoir castle still stand on a hilltop northeast of the modern port, although the castle is mostly ruined. Today, the town is a port for cruise ships offering passengers a visit to the site of Ancient Olympia, approximately 40 minutes drive inland.
